He left Unilever in 1995 to take up the role of Head of Human Resources at British American Tobacco (K) Ltd, a role he held until the year 2000 when he was appointed Group HR Director at Kenya Commercial Bank. At KCB he spearheaded cultural reform programmes and internal branding initiatives that turned the bank from a parastatal organization to the present day commercial organization that prides itself with the largest branch network in East & Central Africa. In 2004, Mr. Mwendar was appointed Group HR Director of East African Breweries Ltd, a Diageo plc subsidiary, and again led internal rebranding initiatives that launched Diageo into the Eastern African markets. During the course of his career, Mr. Mwendar has played a consultancy and advisory role on HR matters to numerous individuals and organizations and has made several presentations to HR practitioners in the region. He has also attended numerous professional courses abroad including in institutions such as Harvard Law School. He has been a past Vice Chairman of the Kenya Institute of Bankers, member – Board of Governors of Alliance High School, and Assistant Chairman – Institute of HR Management of Kenya. Thomas attended the University of Nairobi and graduated with a Bsc. Degree in 1995 in Mathematics and an MBA degree majoring in Accounting and Finance in the Year 2000. Thomas has Part I, II, and III (Information Management, Audit and Assurance Services) Qualifications attained from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA-UK).He also passed the examination for Certified Information Systems Auditors (CISA) in 2001. Over the years in Kenya Airways he has attended several programmes, Airline Planning course offered by Boeing Aircraft Manufacturer-Boeing, Executive Development Programme at Gordon Institute of Business Science-University of Pretoria, Lean Management by training Leadership Consulting of South Africa as well as Coaching and Mentoring training by Mentors International of South Africa. He also attended Executive Development Programme at General Electric’s Crotonville Center in New York and a 3 day ‘MBA’ course in low cost airlines offered by The MBA training company in London, Leadership development programmes organized by London Business School and another by Rolls-Royce on site (at KQ), in 2007 and 2008 respectively, in addition to numerous other courses both locally and internationally. .

Thomas has and continues to supervise Several Master of Science (Msc) students in Air Transport and Operations Management, Faculty of Aerospace engineering, Delft University of Technology, a Leading European Technology University on several transformational projects at Kenya Airways since 2010.He is also a PhD Researcher in Air Transport and Operations management at the same University of Technology in the Netherlands.

He is a part-time lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, teaching project Management. He is also Finalizing a Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) at IESE Business School in Barcelona Spain, done in different locations i.e. Barcelona, Newyork, Shanghai, Silicon Valley in California,Sao Paulo, on a Global leader Part-Scholarship awarded by the IESE Alumni.

Francis Musila – Ground Services Director

Francis was appointed as Ground Services Director in October 2015 after 9 years in the organization. He is an energetic and self-driven individual with over 20 years work experience in banking and aviation, and has a tremendous capacity for efficiency and goal achievement. In 2007, following twelve years service at an International Banking Group, he joined Kenya Airways where he has been responsible for acquiring and phasing in of new aircraft into the Kenya airways fleet.

During his tenure as the Head of Fleet Development, he presided over expansion programmes that resulted in the doubling of the aircraft fleet through acquisition, configuration and introduction of state of the art aircraft such as the Embraer E190, Boeing Sky Interior 737-800, Boeing 787 Dreamliner and Boeing 777-300ER, into the airline. In this role Francis was also responsible for engine acquisition and engine maintenance programme selection for new aircraft types such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

In July 2014, Francis was appointed to the role of Head of Operations Control, where he managed a team of just under a hundred staff that coordinates the day-to-day, minute by minute Network wide operations of Kenya Airways, providing a centralized, real-time operational control and management of the airline’s overall flight operation. This includes flight scheduling, tail assignment, aircraft movement control, flight planning & flight dispatch, crew management and other aspects of flight coordination. In a nut shell, Francis’ role involves supervision of the incoming and outgoing flights to guarantee punctual, safe and reliable daily flight operations. Following primary and high school education in Kenya, Francis graduated with an honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering from University of Manchester (UK) in 1993 and a Master of Science degree in Engineering from Cranfield University (UK) in 1994.

Francis has proven his ability to adapt to new and unfamiliar circumstances through his work in a variety of International assignments (including Accra, London and Johannesburg) and through his successful career changes from his field of training to the finance arena and then back to his passion – Engineering & Management. Throughout his working career, he has been heavily involved in Operations, Projects and People management, maintaining a keen interest in efficiency, process improvement and coaching. He is married with three children and lives in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mr. Dick Murianki – Acting Group Finance Director

Until his appointment Mr Dick Murianki was the General Manager, Kenya Airways Cargo. Mr Murianki has been in the airline industry for over 12 years and served in various roles including as a Finance Manager, Commercial Business Performance Manager, and Head of Financial Control prior to his current role as General Manager for the cargo business in Kenya Airways.

Kenya Airways was established in February 1977, following the break up of the erstwhile East African Community and subsequent disbanding of the jointly-owned East African Airways. Initially, the airline was fully owned by the Kenyan Government. In 1986, Kenyan Government initiated moves to privatize Kenya Airways, with a view to promote economic development and growth of country. It was believed that the airline would do better, if it were privatized. In 1991, further moves were made to privatize the airline. At that time, Philip Ndegwa was appointed as the Chairman of the Board, for the purpose freeing the airing from the Government's ownership.

The moves were put into action and finally, Kenya Airways was privatized. In the fiscal year 1993-1994, the airline produced its first profit since the start of its commercial operations. In 1995, Kenya Airways came up with an IPO. Kenya Airways started trading on Nairobi Stock Exchange in 1996. In 2002, Kenya Airways acquired 49% shareholding in Precision Air, a Tanzanian carrier. In 2007, Kenya Airways was officially invited by SkyTeam, the second largest airline alliance in the world, to become one of the first SkyTeam Associate Airlines.

Kenya Airways has a modern fleet that consists of 26 aircrafts, which include Embraer 170LR, Boeing 777-200ER, Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737-700 and Boeing 737-300. The 1990s

Southwest inaugurated its first Boeing 737-500 in early 1990. The airline billed it as the newest, most technologically advanced, and quietest aircraft in the world at the time. In May 1990, the airline added its 100th airplane, also a Boeing 737-500.

Much of the early 1990s was devoted to growth. The airline inaugurated services to Baltimore– now one of the airline’s largest operating bases– and grew heavily in the Midwest and West Coast.

By the end of 1995, Southwest had 224 aircraft in its fleet and had grown its recognition in the United States. Continuing its trend from the previous decade, Southwest maintained high customer satisfaction.

By 1996, Southwest expanded further into the southeastern United States with new flights to Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, and Orlando.

The airline also renamed “The Company Club” to the now-infamous “Rapid Rewards.” Later in 1996, the airline introduced the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Visa Card.

In 1997, Congress enacted the Shelby Amendment. This provision to the Wright Amendment allowed flights from Dallas-Love to expand to Mississippi, Alabama, and Kansas. Also, in 1997, Southwest accepts its first Boeing 737-700 Next Generation. The airline is the launch customer for the type.

In 1999, Southwest added its 300th Boeing 737 as it continued to expand on the East Coast, adding services out of Connecticut and North Carolina. By the end of the year, the carrier had 312 aircraft in its fleet and flew over 840,000 trips that year.


British Airways Kenya Flight Diverts To Origin Then Departs Again

It’s not too common for flights to have to make a U-turn during the course of their journey. But it’s even more uncommon for a flight to make a double U-turn. However, that’s just what happened for flight BA65 en route from London to Nairobi. The flight took off at 10:34 local time today but is about three hours late arriving at its destination in Kenya. The flight details

British Airways flight BA65 took off from London Heathrow Airport (LHR) at 10:34, headed for Nairobi, Kenya. However, according to Aerotime, after one hour and 40 minutes in the air, the flight landed back in Heathrow. But shortly after landing, it took off for Kenya once again.

Reports indicate that as the Boeing 777-200 was flying in the area around Frankfurt (Germany), the aircraft’s crew received a message that Kenyan authorities would not allow the flight access to the country’s airspace. Kenyan media reports that the country announced a ban on international travel on Sunday with the ruling coming into effect midnight of March 25th.

With the aircraft being airborne for one hour and 40 minutes, and reports that the aircraft took off at 13:15, we can see that the aircraft was not on the ground at Heathrow for very long at all. While it’s unfortunate that time and fuel was wasted, it is better than risking a single U-Turn to Heathrow further along in the journey.

Air travel chaos

Simple Flying has already reported on numerous U-Turn events associated with COVID-19 restrictions and fears. Our most recent report before this was on March 22nd when a KLM flight on its way to Delhi (India) had to return to Amsterdam (Netherlands) while over Russia. The cause of the incident was a miscommunication between the flight and India’s civil aviation authorities as India was in the midst of imposing its own travel restrictions.

Before this incident on March 15th, a number of Jet2 flights heading to Spain from the United Kingdom made U-turns over France, returning to their departing airports. In this case, the planes were directed to turn around due to coronavirus fears and precautions. This proved to be a wise decision as Spain has been one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic.

We are currently tracking 27 Jet2 flights. 7 of them with destination Spain have turned around and are returning to the UK.

At this time it seems like the majority of chaos is over as the largest countries have imposed their own restrictions. However, we may see a few more situations like this in the days and weeks to come as even more countries restrict their airspace and cut themselves off from international commercial flights.

The main exception to this has been special repatriation flights organized between commercial airlines and national governments. Why Kenya Airways is abbreviated as KQ and not KA

You may be wondering why Kenya Airways is abbreviated as KQ and not KA. What does KQ stand for? What does the Q stand for?

Let us take a short trip down the history lane of the airline. Kenya Airways was initially East African Airways. Founded in 1946, the regional airline served Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania and had its headquarters in Nairobi. The relations between the countries however did not last long and led to the collapse of East African Community which subsequently ended East African Airways.

In 1977 Kenya Airways was born out of the regional airline-East African Airways. By that time Korea already had its aviation industry running (Korean Air) and International Air Transport Association (IATA) already had assigned them the code ‘KA’. By virtue of being ‘late’ Kenya was assigned the code KQ and it is the reason the Kenyan airline is referred to as KQ and not KA.

IATA is an aviation body that works with airlines across the world to promote their safety and reliability. IATA also sets standards for the aviation business from packaging to ticketing. It enjoys a membership of over 260 airlines across 60 countries.


Climate of Kenya

Seasonal climatic changes are controlled by the large-scale pressure systems of the western Indian Ocean and adjacent landmasses. From December to March, northeast winds predominate north of the Equator, while south to southeast winds dominate south of it. These months are fairly dry, although rain may occur locally. The rainy season extends from late March to May, with air flowing from the east in both hemispheres. From June to August there is little precipitation, and southwest winds prevail north of the Equator as southeast winds prevail in the south.

In the Lake Victoria basin, annual precipitation varies from 40 inches (1,000 mm) around the lakeshore to more than 70 inches (1,800 mm) in the higher elevations in the eastern areas. The lakeshore has excellent agricultural potential because it can expect 20 to 35 inches (500 to 900 mm) in most years. Daily maximum temperatures range from 80 °F (27 °C) in July to 90 °F (32 °C) in October and February.

In the Rift Valley, average temperatures decrease from about 84 °F (29 °C) in the north to just over 61 °F (16 °C) around Lakes Nakuru and Naivasha in the south. The adjacent highlands are generally moderate, with average temperatures ranging between 56 and 65 °F (13 and 18 °C). The floor of the Rift Valley is generally dry, while the highland areas receive more than 30 inches (760 mm) of rain per year. The reliable precipitation and fertile soils of the Mau Escarpment form the basis for a thriving agricultural sector.

In the eastern plateau region, annual precipitation in most areas averages 20 to 30 inches (500 to 760 mm), although agriculture is hampered by extremely variable precipitation. The semiarid and arid regions of northern, northeastern, and southern Kenya have high temperatures but very erratic precipitation. Most places experience average temperatures of 85 °F (29 °C) or more, while annual precipitation is only about 10 inches (250 mm) in the north and less than 20 inches (500 mm) in the south.

In most parts of the coast, average temperatures exceed 80 °F (27 °C) and relative humidity is high year-round. From the humid coast, where annual precipitation is between 30 and 50 inches (760 and 1,270 mm), precipitation decreases westward to about 20 inches (500 mm) per year. Only on the southern coast is precipitation reliable enough for prosperous agriculture.
